PrecisionBiotics has over 20 years of history, and it all started with our founder, Barry Kiely, Microbiologist with a passion for gut health. We sat down with Barry to, who believes the human microbiome contains the answers to many modern health problems, and this belief is the foundation of PrecisionBiotics today.
- Tell us a little about yourself Barry?
I am a Microbiologist and have worked with microbes for over 40 years. My career history includes working for Pfizer, Shell & University College Cork (UCC) but in 1999 we formed Alimentary Health Ltd, which later became PrecisionBiotics, which I co-founded.
- Where did your interest in the gut microbiome and bacterial strains begin?
Throughout my career, I have always been interested in understanding how microbes can be applied for the betterment of society. My interest in gut microbiology started when I returned to work in UCC in 1995 where I interacted with a group of progressive and likeminded clinicians & scientists working in this area.
- Why did you start PrecisionBiotics? What was the passion behind it?
It was the opportunity to investigate a probiotic strategy for managing Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) which provided the platform to form the company. The passion lay in a strong conviction that the solution could be found in the gut microbiome. This conviction has since broadened to other health care issues outside of IBS and our passion remains to continue to explore the power of the gut microbiome.
- What has been your greatest achievement for PrecisionBiotics?
It has to be building PrecisionBiotics into a quality company which has not only provided careers but has also provided products that help to support so many people.
- What do you wish people knew about the gut and the power of bacteria?
Simply, the importance of a healthy gut microbiome for maintaining a healthy body and mind. This is our mission, to spread this understanding and education to as many people as possible.
- What’s next for PrecisionBiotics and its product range?
We will be continuing to generate the science and products to fulfil our mission, and help people take control of their gut microbiome.
